Canada Humidor Stories… “Leaky Humidor? Or Not…”

Humidor Monitoring with SensorPush

Life in the retail industry is a very interesting one to say the least… not a dull moment 😊

There is no lack of challenges, but also no lack of very satisfying moments, when we look back at our work and conclude that it is all worth it.

With that in mind, we decided that there is a benefit to you our readers and customers, that we share some of the behind the scene stories.

Welcome to a collection of stories from our daily lives inside our little business that we love so much.

Somewhere along this journey you will find situations or maybe personality traits that may seem… weird… Some stories might feel familiar, others might seem far-fetched…

Two things we can guarantee:

  • The situations are real, no fiction involved…
  • Our intent is to share these situations truthfully and with learning in mind… There will be no sarcasm and ridicule intended.

We are Canada Humidor and these are our stories…

Welcome to our First Story… “Leaky Humidor? Or Not…”YouTube Video

A Cigar Humidor was returned by a customer as they believed it was leaky. During this 21 day test, Louis Batonyi with Canada Humidor, proceeds to season and monitor the humidor with SensorPush Technology.

Although the video is quite long, there is a lot of good information that might be of interest to some of our customers. Please do not hesitate to ask questions in the comments. We’ll do our best to answer.

How To Season A Cigar Humidor And Calibrate A Hygrometer

Winter is around the corner and some of us love to travel to Cuba, Dominican Republic or other cigar destinations. Some cigars might make it back to Canada and maybe we need a new Cigar Humidor or revive a dormant one to house those cigars.

The winters in Canada can be brutal for our precious cigars… The very dry environment and fluctuating temperatures inside our homes require us to pay closer attention to the Humidification in the Cigar Humidors.

In this video, Louis Batonyi, with Canada Humidor, explains how he seasons a Cigar Humidor and calibrates a hygrometer, with the hope that he can answer some of the questions that our customers have on those 2 topics.

How to Purge and Fill a Xikar Cigar Lighter

In the world of cigar lighters, Xikar Cigar Lighters are some of the best out there. But even a great lighter will not work properly if it’s not purged and filled with butane properly.

In this short video, Louis with Canada Humidor explains how we purge and fill a Xikar Lighter with Xikar Premium Butane in our shop… And we do it a lot, hundreds of times a month to be exact. We fill, purge and test every lighter before it leaves our warehouse on its way to our customers.

At Canada Humidor we like to HERF…

HERF… Smoking cigars is sometimes known as herfing, and a herf is a lively gathering of like-minded puffers (source: A Way with Words).

2018 spring was so long overdue and so highly anticipated that we all wanted to celebrate it with bang… So… what better way to do so than go to a Cinco de Mayo Cigar Herf in Saskatoon….

Tres Amigos de Luchador Locos… Bing, Rick and George…

Mr. Paul Giommi of The Luchador Locos, Cigar Group in Saskatchewan, was very kind and opened his new cigar lounge to the group for a herf.

We, that have ever organized such event, know that it’s not for the faint of heart to throw such a party, so help is more than welcomed… Mr. Giommi’s friends, George Trotter and Bing Fung, and all the lovely wives came to help.

The party was a tremendous success. The amazing great time we had deserved a short movie, so we can all remember those times of fun and happiness…

Canada Humidor produced the short video and also was in charge with the door prizes: Ammo Can Humidor, Canada Humidor 10th Anniversary Palio Cutter,  Adorini Cigar Punches, Stinky 4 Tall Cigar Ashtrays, Canada Humidor Cigar Stand, etc.

Canada Humidor turns 10… and we’re having a PARTY!!!

Canada Humidor 10th Anniversary

10 years ago, our good friend, Colin Walsh, started Canada Humidor.

In my books, he was an E-commerce pioneer. At the time the word e-commerce did not exist, and Google was not King of the Internet yet 😊

Louis and I bought Canada Humidor from Colin in the summer of 2012 and the rest is history… We absolutely love it! Being able to source the best cigar accessories for the cigar lovers has been a lot of fun and I have to say, very satisfying. Helping our customers enjoy their cigars more has become our passion and goal.

Did I mention that in doing that I discovered that I love making short movies for our social media?… O yeah… and in order to make more movies we “had to” travel to cigar herfs around the country and meet more wonderful people that share the same love for cigars that we do… What a fun experience that has been!!

Smokes & Blokes Herf – Winnipeg 2017
Cuban Herf – Regina 2017
Rocky Mountain Smokeout – Calgary 2017

Enough of me blabbering though… What was I talking about?… Oh yeah… Canada Humidor 10th Year Anniversary Party… Louis and I have had a few drinks and cigars designing the 10th Anniversary Cigar Cutter and planning the party…

The party will take place at  Stoney Nakoda Resort and Casino, on December 2nd.  There will be a buffet dinner, door prizes, a cigar or two, a small gift, cash bar and a shit load of great friends to enjoy!

We hope you buy your tickets and see you all there!!

33 Cigars Tasting Notebook

This frozen Sunday afternoon in Calgary in November, made me long for the summer days, and decided that a Moscow Mule should be in order with our recently acquired 2016 Montecristo No. 4… What a better way to start my new 33 Cigars Tasting Notebook?!

My husband, Louis, agreed that should be a good pairing and left it to me to make the drinks…
Looking at the empty copper mugs and the crazy snow outside, I thought that the whole thing felt kind of depressing, and I needed to add some warm color to our drinks: I should improve the Moscow Mule recipe with something red, like frozen berries and a touch of sweet red vermouth. That should do the trick I thought…

Berries Moscow Mule

Needless to say, Louis was not fond of it, but sure finished the drink stoically, and after that asked for a traditional Moscow Mule
As for me… I absolutely loved it!! The Montecristo cigar paired stunningly with the tartness of the berries. The vermouth, mingled with the ginger beer, brought surprising flavors out of the cigar… The familiar coffee taste was there the whole time, but black pepper, Cardamom and popcorn flavors surfaced and made the old familiar Montecristo seem like an entirely new cigar… in an almost Twilight Zone-ish kind of way

And that’s how my new 33 Cigars Tasting Notebook was started… Did I mention that I am a beginner cigar smoker living among very serious cigars smokers? I need all the help I can get 😉

and to my very pleasant surprise, it fits perfectly in my new Smok’n Gear Cigar Travel Case.
